Gaining in-person experience in the financial services industry is an impactful opportunity for anyone with an interest in the business or finance sectors. My three-day work experience placement at Hartsfield has given me a fantastic insight into the various roles within wealth management and the day-to-day operations of a business.
I am a Year 12 student currently studying Economics A-Level and I initially came across Hartsfield’s website when searching for financial planners in my local area. I was immediately drawn to their authentic feel which ultimately led me to apply for work experience.
During my placement, I spent time with people in a range of different roles including financial planner, investment portfolio manager and business development manager. My meeting with Mark allowed me to gain a superb understanding of the logistical elements of financial planning, such as compliance with Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) regulations.
Additionally, Gareth introduced me to risk profiling and the excellent software used by Hartsfield to curate bespoke client investment portfolios. He also helped me to enhance my knowledge of economic markets and how the business proactively reacts to shifts in these.
Both Matthew and John helped me appreciate the client-focused approach the Hartsfield team takes when delivering their range of services. They outlined how they make a conscious effort to gather information from each individual client to ensure they can best assist them in hitting their investment and lifestyle goals. Furthermore, I was shown how the business places true emphasis on making a difference to the lives of their clients. This dedication is reflected in the outstanding testimonials they receive.
Amelia explained the role of relationship manager and ongoing reviews with clients very clearly to me.
George shed light on Hartsfield’s branding and marketing material and the message this aims to convey to both existing and potential clients. I learnt about the importance of establishing trust and credibility as a business within the financial planning sector and Hartsfield’s ‘right fit’ process which ensures clients are suitable for the business and vice versa.
Across the three days, I gained a better understanding of the significance of teamwork within financial management. I observed first-hand how collaboration between staff members drives success for the business.
Georgina talked me through a few of her focuses as colleagues and culture officer, such as ensuring career progression for employees and creating a positive working culture. I also completed a DISC assessment which summarises key features of your personality and analysed my results with Georgina.
I even had the chance to sit in on a “pod” meeting which allows the team to have weekly reviews. Later on, paraplanner Izzy demonstrated the cashflow modelling software utilised by Hartsfield and assisted me in creating my own cashflow forecast for a fictional client.
My placement reaffirmed my interest in the financial sector. This amazing gateway to discuss and ask questions with experienced professionals has given me great knowledge which will be beneficial to me in my current studies and future career path. I found the unique journeys which led each staff member to Hartsfield particularly interesting.
To conclude, my work experience at Hartsfield has been both valuable and engaging. The staff were all very welcoming and friendly towards me and I greatly appreciate them giving up their time to inform and educate me. Hartsfield is a very professional and supportive working environment which I enjoyed being a part of for a few days!
